The 2009 field course Environmental Science and Conservation Biology: A Field Study in the Biodiversity of Costa Rica was led by Dr. Jacqueline McLaughlin. Associate Professor of Biology at Penn State Lehigh Valley, who is also Founding Director of the CHANCE program. The intense course took selected PA in-service teachers and biology undergraduates through the diverse ecosystems and conservation realities of two developing countries, Costa Rica and Panama. Teachers and students performed daily hands on research and field-based activities at distinguished and dedicated conservation field stations such as the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, Widecast, Smithsonian Institute, and La Selva Biological Station (Organization of Tropical Studies). Dr. Kathleen Fadigan, Assistant Professor of Science Education for Abington and Great Valley campuses, accompanied the group to provide expertise in secondary education teaching and learning methodologies, skills and applications. |
