Sea Turtle Hatchling Orientation from Nest to Ocean

Page 1: Gaining an Understanding of Environmental Cues

In the following activity you will gain an understanding of the possible environmental cues turtle hatchlings observe as they orient from their nests to the ocean.

Almost always at night, hatchlings emerge from their nests hidden within the sandy beaches. Immediately after emergence, they pause for a few seconds and gaze at their surroundings. After analyzing environmental cues, the hatchlings rush seaward and plummet into the water toward the open sea.
